I’m not vegan now, but many years ago I was. Honestly, those where some of the sickest years of my life. I love animals and I don’t like to eat them; however, I have received many messages from Spirit and Science that organic, free-range is the best option for my body.
BUT, there is something very very important I have to share with you, that you’ve likely never thought of, and will change the way you eat meat forever!
You’ve probably heard that antibiotics destroy your gut flora, the garden of good bacteria in your gut. This is what makes or breaks your immune system.
In fact, just one course of antibiotics can cause long lasting gut damage that takes YEARS to reverse.
Knowing that, can you imagine what taking antibiotics every single day would do to your gut?
You might think that’s a crazy notion, who would take antibiotics daily, right? Well, sadly it isn’t so far fetched.
Millions of people unknowingly ingest antibiotics every day… and a major source comes from conventionally raised meat and dairy.
There is now research suggesting that this meat could be having serious impact on your gut microbiome and your children’s gut microbiome. This means your immune, digestive, endocrine, and neurological functions are all being impaired.
You may wonder: Why Are There Antibiotics in Meat?
In the United States, antibiotics are approved to treat animal illness and “increase feed efficiency” – that’s the industry’s way of saying “help animals get fat, faster.”
Unlike in people – who only take antibiotics when they are sick – many animals raised for food are given antibiotics every day as part of their feed.
The changes antibiotics make on the gut microbiome of the animals help speed weight gain, and the faster an animal gains weight, the sooner it can become food.
It may help answer the question as to why American’s are more obese than any other country.
And, although some farmers are now phasing out the practice of using antibiotics solely for weight gain… there is another important factor.
Animals raised in CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) get sick a lot because they are packed together in unclean pens, and fed an unnatural diet of corn, soy, wheat, and even expired candy.
The standard is: More illness = More antibiotic use.
Most beef, chicken, pork, and turkey in the United States comes from CAFOs, where animals are given routine antibiotics.
What Are Those Antibiotics Doing To Us?
We’ve all heard, “you are what you eat.”
And when it comes to meat from animals, treated their entire lives with antibiotics… it seems to be true.
Researchers from the American Gut Project found that those who ate fewer plants (aka more meat) had more antibiotic-resistant genes in their guts. This is believed to be a direct result of eating lots of antibiotic-treated CAFO meat.
In addition, the researchers shared that the guts of CAFO meat-eaters were similar to those who took antibiotics; unhealthy, often overrun with too many bad guys and not enough good guys in the gut.
This has serious long-term ramifications…
First, it can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant “superbugs.”
But on a personal scale, it can contribute to antibiotic-related issues like weight gain, acne, C. difficile infection, allergies, gas and bloating, autoimmune issues and other gastrointestinal problems.
I’m an Action kind of gal. So, What We Can Start Doing About This, Today??
We can’t overhaul farming practices overnight (though I am working on it through education and my own personal choices!).
But there is something we can do right now:
Join me in my pledge to STOP eating CAFO meat!
By saying no to meat raised in CAFOs, we not only help protect our health, but we’re supporting the small farmers who raise animals the old-fashioned way. It’s a win-win.
But Don’t Just Give Up Meat, unless it’s for a short period of time for a therapeutic nutritional program.
I want you to stop eating meat raised in CAFOs and treated with antibiotics… but that doesn’t mean you should stop eating meat entirely!
High-quality, organic, grass-fed meat is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on earth.
It’s packed with all 9 essential amino acids, zinc, selenium, choline, B vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids, CLA, antioxidants, and more.
No food on earth is an equal substitute for the nutrient profile of organic, range-free meat. I speak about this in my first book “Holistic Keto for Gut Health; A Program for Resetting Your Metabolism”. I dispel many myths about vegetarianism.
(And don’t even get me started about soy and vegetable-oil frankenfood fake meat! Horrible for the gut and it takes a huge toll on the Earth to process fake meat – high carbon footprints!)
When you DO eat meat, make it high-quality, organic, grass fed or pasture-raised meat or an organic collagen product. And pray over your meat – thank that animal and the farmers who raised it.
What we spend our money on is considered a “vote of approval”.
Please Join me in my pledge to STOP eating CAFO meat!
